U.S. Bars SkyWest From Cancelling 29 Cities

• The U.S. Transportation Department on Monday barred regional carrier SkyWest Inc (SKYW.O) from ending service to 29 locales until replacement carriers can be found under the government's subsidy program to provide air service to smaller communities.

• SkyWest provides regional service for key airlines such as United Airlines , Alaska Airlines (ALK.N), Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) and American Airlines . SkyWest operates the 29 routes under the United Express name providing regional service for United Airlines.

• The Transportation Department said SkyWest cannot terminate service through July 8 "and for additional 30-day periods as necessary" in the event federal officials do not secure another air carrier to provide service under the program at any of the 29 communities.

• SkyWest said it is "eager to work with officials toward solutions that would enable us to reconnect these communities to the National Air Transportation System in the future, and we are committed to remaining flexible and adjusting our plans if the situation improves more quickly than currently expected."

• The Transportation Department said it wants other carriers to file proposals no later than April 11 to offer flights to replace the canceled service.

• United Airlines Chief Executive Scott Kirby told Congress in December the airline had nearly 100 regional airplanes effectively grounded "because there's not enough pilots to fly them. ... The country is going to need thousands of pilots."

American Pilots Want Customers To Know How Bad It Is

KEY POINTS:

• You see, as airlines boast of recovery, they're also cancelling quite a lot of flights. Or, as United Airlines recently announced, turning some non-stop flights into one-stops.

• Which all leads me to the pilots at American Airlines.

• They're suggesting that things are crumbling somewhat. No, they're not doing it with the odd tweet here and the odd press release there.

• Instead, the pilots union created a little film that reveals what they see as their own airline's great mess.

• A spokesperson told me: "American Airline pilots participate in informational picketing periodically, which isn't out of the ordinary and has no impact on our operation."

• There was also a conciliatory aspect, as the spokesperson added: "We are jointly committed with APA [the pilots' union] to ongoing Section 6 bargaining focused on reaching an agreement that will benefit our pilots and our operation."

• But the American pilots aren't alone. Delta's pilots have begun picketing. This is beginning to sound less informational and more protesty.

• As the union leader, Capt. Evan Baach told WSB-TV: "Our pilots are tired. They are frustrated with their schedules."

Delta On Verge Of Buying 100 Boeing 737 MAXs

KEY POINTS:

• Delta Air Lines is reportedly in talks for 100 Boeing 737-10 MAX jets in a deal that could be announced in the coming weeks.

• The deal, if confirmed, would be the first order from Delta for Boeing’s best-selling single-aisle airplane family, and the first major Boeing order for the carrier in a decade.

• It comes as Delta – the only major U.S. carrier without a 737 MAX on order – reshapes its fleet in anticipation of a swift recovery from the pandemic.

• Currently Delta has about 60 Boeing 717s, 77 Boeing 737-800s, and 111 Boeing 757-200s. The MAX 10 is Boeing’s largest new narrowbody jet that they’re working hard to get into commercial service after first flying in June 2021.

SkyWest Partners with Southwest Airlines’ Destination 225° Program

KEY POINTS:

• SkyWest Airlines (NASDAQ: SKYW) announced on Thursday a new partnership with Southwest Airlines (NASDAQ: LUV) career pathway program Destination 225°. This partnership will give aspiring aviators more career opportunities following initial flight training. Students looking to become a Southwest first officer can build professional flying experience at SkyWest before making the transition to Southwest.

• “We are excited to partner with Southwest to support this unique program designed to help pilots continue building exceptional careers every step of the way,” Tracy Gallo, SkyWest senior vice president of flight operations, said in a statement. “SkyWest is known for our outstanding team of professional pilots, and we look forward to this new partnership.”

• The Destination 225° program establishes a career path from initial training, followed by time building in a professional setting like SkyWest, to ultimately becoming a first officer at Southwest Airlines. Throughout the process, candidates in the program receive mentorship from Southwest pilots.

• Alan Kasher, Southwest’s senior vice president of air operations, said the addition of the SkyWest partnership will attract students to the Destination 225° Program. “We are thrilled to help attract professional aviators to SkyWest while partnering to develop candidates for future first officer opportunities at Southwest Airlines. We expect to hire thousands of first officers over the coming years, and we look forward to offering this new path for skilled SkyWest pilots to pursue a career with the Southwest team.”
