Thousands of Flights Delayed Sunday After Thanksgiving

  • More than 2,500 flights into or out of U.S. airports were delayed as of late Sunday morning during the post-Thanksgiving travel rush as severe weather, including rain, heavy winds and snow, swept through major cities.

  • Nearly 55 million people were expected to travel 50 miles or more from their homes this Thanksgiving weekend — “a 1.5% increase over 2021 and 98% of pre-pandemic volumes,” according to AAA. In addition to the 2,564 flights delayed as of 2:30 p.m. ET, 63 U.S. flights had been canceled, according to FlightAware.com.
  • Wind advisories were in place Sunday for about 14 million people across the Ohio Valley and Southeast, including Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee; Louisville, Kentucky; and Asheville, North Carolina.
A wind gust of 53 mph was reported early Sunday morning in Kentucky. Gusts this afternoon will range from 25 to 35 mph.

United’s Fleet Continues to Grow

KEY POINTS:

  • On Tuesday, November 22nd, Boeing delivered a shiny new 787-10 Dreamliner to United Airlines. This latest delivery brings the 787-10 fleet size at United up to 15 aircraft. Sources note that the carrier is expecting another six of these stretched Dreamliners.
  • According to FlightRadar24.com, the aircraft registered as N13018 (MSN 66987/Line Number 1132) took off from Boeing facilities at Everett Paine Field (PAE) at 18:23 local time. The Boeing 787 then flew for four hours to touch down at Washington Dulles (IAD) at 01:24 the next morning.
  • United Airlines is expecting to take delivery of another six Boeing 787-10s at the time of this article's production. Indeed, it appears that the 787-10 registered N12020 will be the airline's 16th. However, it's worth noting that the airline is expected to place a massive widebody aircraft order before the end of the year.

Frontier Drops It’s Customer Service Line

KEY POINTS:

  • Frontier airlines will no longer let customers call a phone number in order to speak with a live agent. And while the budget airline is known for its cost-cutting measures, most major airlines still operate customer service lines.
  • Customers will instead have to rely on other ways to contact the airline: a chatbot on its website, a live chat available 24/7, its social media channels and even WhatsApp, according to Frontier spokesperson, Jennifer De La Cruz, who confirmed the news to NPR on Saturday.
  • The change, said De La Cruz, "enables us to ensure our customers get the information they need as expeditiously and efficiently as possible." She said the airline found that most customers preferred communicating through online channels.
  • When customers call the airline's now-defunct customer service line, they hear a prerecorded message telling travelers about the other options they have for contacting the airline.
  • "At Frontier, we offer the lowest fares in the industry by operating our airline as efficiently as possible," the airline's customer service line now replies.
