Fasten Your Seatbelts… I promise it’ll be an interesting ride

In 2010, I was a 26-year old 3,500-hour pilot with no turbine PIC time facing the 2nd worst historical pilot hiring market within the past decade.

2 short years prior, I was flying celebrities, major athletes, and musicians my friends and family adored. This was it, the pinnacle of personal and professional success; I had arrived.

Just then, in late 2009, like an earthquake, the economic crisis hit. Pilots were getting laid off left and right, friends were losing their homes, and I went from being on the fast track to Captain, to getting furloughed and losing everything I had.

To say I was utterly unprepared for this new reality was an understatement. I had wrapped my whole identity up in a job that had evaporated before my eyes.

It was a real punch to the gut, I didn’t know who I was anymore, and it was getting harder to look at myself in the mirror day by day.

One week later, my wife Ilene came home from work to find me laying on the couch, in the same place I had been all week…

…She asked me to write out an action plan on a sheet of paper so she could see what needed to be done.

So, I did…

…I listed out every contact I had, which flight department or airline they worked for, and listed them in order of most to least likely willing or able to help.

Two days later she came home and told me to print out 20 copies of my resume…

…She said she was gonna personally drive me to meet every contact I had to help me drum up a job.

2 days later, I began walking in to meet one Chief Pilot after another…

…each of them barely making eye contact with me. They were terrified they were gonna be walked out just like I was, how could they help me when they were barely holding on themselves?!?

Each time I made the long, lonely walk back from the Chief Pilot’s office to the parking lot, there was my wife Ilene, sitting in the car, waiting to give me a hug and tell me it was gonna be ok.

She did this for a WHOLE month, driving me around, giving me hugs, and keeping my self-esteem as high above ZERO as possible.

That’s when it hit me…like a rock!

Most pilots really don’t get what it takes to sidestep the HR process. They think like pilots…not hiring managers and recruiters…

…This leads pilots down the wrong path, focusing their precious seconds highlighting experiences that either doesn’t matter to the person they’re speaking to…

It’s kind of like a dog watching TV…They’re seeing the same things you are…

THEY JUST DON’T GET HOW IT RELATES TO THEM PERSONALLY

I finally realized finding a job was about knowing what the right thing to do is and WHEN to do it…

My ability to make it through all of the ups, downs, and rejections it took to weed out my competition meant that when it was all said and done, I was the last one standing at the top of the mountain!

Remember, everyone else is experiencing the same level of rejection you are…

The successful ones are the pilots who turn that rejection into the fuel for their success engine…

You see, we all need coaches, cheerleaders, advisors, and confidants to keep us on task, keep the strategy clear and simple, and MOST importantly…

…Keep us out of our own heads!

Eventually, about 3 months after getting kicked to the curb, I was offered 3 jobs:

  • Part 135 Jet SIC position
  • Part 91 Director of Operations position
  • Part 91 Jet PIC position

After all of the resume writing, application reviews, and interview prep, it turned out each of those were just tools…

…It was the strategy, encouragement, and confidence that powered those tools.

You see, without my support structure, my tools were just like a power drill with dead batteries…

Super important, very much needed, and highly ineffective!

Success isn’t determined by how smart or capable we are, it’s determined by our strategy and support structure.

Making it through the HR process is long and stressful. You can go it alone, you can take every punch to the gut that comes your way, BUT, you don’t have to…

…because there is a better way. A less painful, more engaging, and less scary way with far fewer unknowns.

Let Raven be your support structure and let us show you that better way.

We have 581 pilots who’ve worked with us over the years who constantly stay in touch, serving as the structure and backbone for every new pilot that walks through our doors…

…Every new client that stands on the shoulders of those 581 pilots, learning, growing, and adapting based on their lessons learned.

Give me 15 minutes to learn who you are, what you’ve been doing that’s working, what you’re currently doing that isn’t working…

Let us help you make your future better, brighter, and closer to today.

This isn’t magic, it’s just hard work, clear focus, and learning all the lessons from others who’ve made the trek before you.

Give me 15 minutes and I’ll show you a different path…one with far less potholes, much clearer edge lines, and way smoother paving.
