Envoy Pilots Get Triple Pay To Pick Up Trips In July

  • American Airlines’ regional carrier Envoy Air is offering pilots triple pay to pick up trips for most of next month, an effort the airline says will help it avoid flight disruptions during the peak summer travel season.

  • “Super critical coverage has been declared for” July 2 to 31 for all bases, according to a note sent to Envoy pilots on Monday that was seen by CNBC. “Any open time flown during this time frame will be paid at 300%. Thank you in advance for your help.”
  • Ric Wilson, vice president of flight operations for Envoy, said although the triple pay is applicable throughout July, it doesn’t necessarily mean open trips are available for pilots each day.
  • “We are into our peak flying season and we want to ensure that we can operate dependably for our customers,” Wilson said.
  • “As part of the proactive strategy to run a reliable schedule during the peak summer travel season, Envoy is offering pilots triple pay to pick up uncovered trips on their days off in the month of July,” the carrier said. “This will only be offered if there are open trips available, and currently Envoy is fully covered with its flight schedule this summer.”

Airlines Cancel 700+ U.S. Flights As Labor Crunch Weighs

KEY POINTS:

  • Airlines canceled over 700 flights in the United States on Monday, as adverse weather and a shortage of staff hurt their ability to keep up with a surge in summer travel demand.
  • Total flight cancellations within, into, or out of the United States as of 1.07 p.m. ET were 747, as per flight-tracking website Flightaware.com. Nearly 860 flights were canceled on Sunday.
  • Delta Air Lines had over 200 cancellations, Republic Airways Inc and United Airlines Holdings Inc had 196 and 122 flight cancellations, respectively, while American Airlines Group Inc canceled 62 flights as of Monday afternoon.
  • American Airlines said the cancellations were largely due to weather and air traffic control initiatives designed to regulate traffic.
  • Delta, United and Republic did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.
  • In Europe, recent airport snarls have been blamed on a shortage of employees, as many workers, who were laid off during the pandemic, desert airport work for flexible working practices and other occupations.
  • Even the U.S. regulator Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) faces staff shortages.
  • The FAA last week granted United approval to temporarily cut Newark flights after the Chicago-based carrier petitioned for a waiver, citing airport construction and air traffic control staffing.

Delta Pilots To Picket Amid Surging Flight Cancellations

KEY POINTS:

  • Hundreds of off-duty Delta Air Lines pilots plan to picket this week, demanding a pay increase and that the carrier change their schedules to reduce flight disruptions.
  • The Air Line Pilots Association said in a statement Monday that its nearly 14,000 members are working longer hours even as the airlines cancel thousands of flights, angering customers.
  • “When delays or cancellations happen, the pilots share in our passengers’ frustration,” said Jason Ambrosi, a union official and Delta pilot, said in the statement. “As long-term stakeholders in our airline, seeing our operational reliability suffer is bad business and puts the Delta brand at risk.”
  • Pilots played a major role in helping Delta recoup its financial losses from the coronavirus pandemic, but their pay hasn’t changed since 2016, the union said. The labor group is also asking for improvements in retirement benefits and job protections.

A330 Hits Air France Boeing 777 And Takes Off

KEY POINTS:

  • On Friday, June 17th, an ITA Airways jet (still in Alitalia livery) was about to begin flight AZ611 from New York to Rome Fiumicino. The aircraft was an Airbus A330-200 registered EI-EJL, which is at present roughly 10 years old. Taxiing towards the runway for departure, the jet clipped an Air France Boeing 777-200, registered F-GSPQ, which had arrived from Paris CDG.
  • While the crew of the ITA Airways A330 was completely oblivious to a collision, the Air France jet was well-aware of what had happened. Reacting quickly, the 777’s crew urged ATC to keep the ITA aircraft on the ground.
  • “This is Air France 008, we are on stand nine and there was an Alitalia passing behind us that hit our aircraft. It’s so you can tell them not to take off.” -Air France pilot
  • However, by the time the situation was understood by ATC, the A330 was already in the air and on its way across the Atlantic. ATC contacted the ITA Airways jet and asked about the incident, but the crew denied that it had been involved in any kind of incident while taxiing towards take-off.
