Delta Changing Hiring Process for Active Duty Military Pilots

  • Delta is expanding its recruitment strategy by offering jobs in the flight deck to full-time, active-duty U.S. military pilots up to two years before their retirement.

  • These conditional job offers can also be extended to Active Guard Reserve pilots in what is a significant expansion from the previous timeline of six months before retirement. For all other military pilots, Delta will begin interview processes and extending conditional job offers to successful candidates one year before their availability date.

Spirit Airlines Offers Big Raises to Pilots in New Contract

KEY POINTS:

  • In a memo sent out to its members on Friday, Spirit's pilot union said the deal will result in a 43% cumulative weighted average pay raise for first officer and a 25% wage increase for captain over two years. Overall, it would lead to a 34% cumulative weighted average increase in pay rates for Spirit pilots, the memo said.
  • The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), which represents pilots at the ultra-low-cost carrier, said the new contract agreement represents an economic gain of $463 million or 27% over the next two years for the pilots.
  • If ratified by the pilots, the two-year agreement will become effective on Jan. 1. A date for a union member vote on the offer was not immediately known. The pilot union has planned roadshows between Dec. 14-20 to generate support for the deal.
  • The proposed contract also provides for higher training pay and increased contribution to 401(k). ALPA said the deal involves "zero concessions" on the part of Spirit pilots.

United Pulled Out of City #36 Since Pandemic

KEY POINTS:

  • Small U.S. cities continue to shoulder much of the burden of pandemic-era airline schedule changes.
  • The latest example comes from Pueblo, Colorado, a small city located about a two-hour drive south of Denver. Pueblo is losing service from United Airlines, as first seen in Cirium schedules and later confirmed by a carrier spokesperson.
  • United is pulling out of Pueblo on Jan. 14, 2023. Until then, the carrier will continue flying the 108-mile route to Denver on an up-to-twice-daily basis. United Express regional affiliate SkyWest Airlines operates the route using a 50-seat CRJ-200 on behalf of the airline.
  • In a milquetoast statement confirming the Pueblo cut, a carrier spokesperson shared that "United regularly adjusts its schedule for a variety of reasons including demand, the broader needs of our network and more."

American Set to Boost Overseas Scheduling from DFW for 2023

KEY POINTS:

  • American Airlines is bringing back flights from DFW International Airport to Asia in 2023 and boosting frequencies to another two European travel destinations.
  • Fort Worth-based American will restore daily flights to Tokyo Haneda International Airport in Japan starting March 25 after only flying to Tokyo’s other airport, Narita, since the summer of 2020.
  • American is also doubling flights from DFW to Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Rome and Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris starting in June for two daily flights to each destination.
  • From DFW, American will operate its largest long-haul schedule next summer since 2019, peaking at 589 flights in July and August to 15 destinations in South America, Europe and Asia, according to data from Cirium.
