Aviation Industry Updates: June 28, 2020

Delta Preparing to WARN 2,558 Pilots | Just Another Negotiating Tactic?

This past Friday (June 26) Delta Air Lines and DAL ALPA released LOA #20-02, “2020 Voluntary Early Out Program (VEOP)” to “incentivize pilots to retire in lieu of a possible involuntary reduction in pilots.”

In a separate memo from Director of Flight Operations, John Laughter, he reiterates his message from previous communications “early retirements alone likely won’t be enough to avoid pilot furloughs altogether.”

Delta’s summer revenue continues to be down by 75% according to the memo and while it mentions the recent uptick in demand, Delta believes it will take “at least two years” to recover to pre-covid levels.

Laughter goes on to say “we will send notices to 2,558 pilots as required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (the “WARN Act”) next week to let them know of a possible furlough.”

The memo goes on to state, “We hope that we will not have to reduce jobs involuntarily and are prepared to continue discussions with your elected representatives.” “We look forward to working with ALPA on this next critical piece of our plan to protect as many-if not all-pilot jobs through the pandemic.” Our perspective is, this language directly opens the door to begin discussions on contract concessions with the future promise of jobs saved.

“Separations under the VEOP will begin no earlier than September 1, 2020. All Program Participants awarded a VEOP will be separated from employment no later than January 1, 2022.”[fancy-ul icon_type="font_icon" icon="icon-plane" color="Accent-Color" alignment="left" spacing="default"]

The HR System Is Broken | Secret: Recruiters Hate It as Much as You Do

BREAKING NEWS: The HR system is BROKEN!!

SECRET: Hiring managers HATE it as much as YOU do.

FACT: Job seekers are FLOODING recruiters with resumes DAILY.

THINK about it, RECRUITERS spend 8 SECONDS, on AVERAGE, REVIEWING your resume.

That's 2 hours and 12 minutes review time per 1,000 RESUMES.

With THOUSANDS of pilots APPLYING to jobs ONLINE daily...

RECRUITERS don't have TIME to get to KNOW the REAL YOU.

That's why YOU only have a 3% CHANCE of getting a job if you APPLY ONLINE.

STOP THE INSANITY...GO AROUND THE SYSTEM

WATCH this SHORT video with 2 aviation HR professionals

Here’s How To Get It Done:

1. Comment on LinkedIn daily.

Use the 80/20 rule.

80% relevant PROFESSIONAL posts, 20% PERSONAL.

HELP RECRUITERS get to SEE the REAL YOU, not the resume you.

YOU'RE much MORE than a SHEET of white PAPER.

2. Every COMMENT you make should be filtered through this lens.

Does this post, comment, or article show how you're:

  • SHARP as a tack
  • ENTHUSIASTIC
  • An EXPERT in your field

Most people hit one or two of those, but not all three.

3. Don't be just like everyone else. Posts like "that's great" , "awesome", and "congratulations" tell us nothing about you.

Add to the CONVERSATION...

DISAGREE and bring up COUNTERPOINTS.

CONFLICT drives ATTENTION and ENGAGEMENT, not harmony.

Think about your favorite movie.

Now remove all of the conflict, would it still be interesting?

Absolutely not!

Conflict and disagreement are OK and is very different from being disagreeable or argumentative.

DO THIS and your SUCCESS goes from 3% to 50% OVERNIGHT.

Weekly TSA Numbers:

“There's a lot you can do far above and beyond being positive. There is no reason to be hopeless here, you can take control over how you adapt and react to highly unfair circumstances...Hopium, irrational or unwarranted optimism, is a dangerous and addictive drug. Friends don't let friends do Hopium...it's equally as dangerous as hopelessness but for different reasons.”
