KEY POINTS:
RAVEN’S TAKE:
What does United’s CBA with ALPA have to say about Scope and passenger seating?
The pilot contract has lengthy explanations on how United Express may be utilized. With 3,900 possible furloughs coming to the seniority list United must implement UAX fleet changes to comply with the United pilot CBA.
“If a Pilot on the Seniority List with an employment date prior to January 23, 2016 is placed on furlough, the Company shall convert all 76-Seat Aircraft for operation as 70-Seat Aircraft. The number of such aircraft shall continue to be limited as though they were being operated as 76-Seat Aircraft. The Company may again commence operating such Aircraft as 76-Seat Aircraft effective on the date that the most junior Pilot protected by the first sentence of this Section 1-C-1-h is recalled from furlough.”
How do the furloughs at United affect future hiring at contractually covered UAX airlines?
Due to protections under LOA 12-09 “United Express Job Opportunities for Furloughed United Pilots,” if you had hoped to land a job flying for a carrier under the covered UAX brands, and there are United Mainline pilots furloughed, those pilots get first rights to hiring that occurs at UAX.
