United To Open New Flight Training Center In Houston
KEY POINTS:
- Constructed near United Airlines’ base at Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), the 50,000-square-foot facility is set to become the airline’s largest training center. The building offers enough classroom space to ready 8,000 flight attendants each year – with a specialized aquatics center for safety training. According to local media, the facility will open on January 17, with an opening ceremony hosted by CEO Scott Kirby, President Brett Hair, and Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner.
- United Airlines’ new training center comes as part of the airline’s $1 billion investment at the airport over the past decade. In 2020 the carrier opened a $200 million Technical Operations Centre (UTOC) in Houston, expanding hangar space to service its ever-growing fleet, adding a warehouse distribution center and additional administrative offices.
- “These big investments are signals to the nation and world that Houston is only getting stronger,” Houston Airport director Mario Diaz explained following the opening of the UTOC facility.
- “Our airport’s connectivity is expanding, and our economy is growing. And so, our partnership with United is that much more important. We will lead the way forward as we plan to meet the growing demand for domestic and international travel in the years to come. We are putting the infrastructure in place now so that we are ahead. We are true partners who are united.”

American Pilots Raise 'serious safety concerns' About Cockpit Protocol Changes
KEY POINTS:
- The union representing American Airlines pilots has raised concerns about new cockpit procedures the airline implemented Tuesday, saying pilots had not been given adequate time or training to learn them.
- While pilots would normally receive formal in-person or online training on procedural updates of this kind, Allied Pilots Association spokesperson Captain Dennis Tajer told USA TODAY in an interview that they only received a training bulletin (or handout), along with updates to the operating manual – which he estimated comprised 100 pages of reading between them – and a short video with a general overview of the changes that he says was not specific to the aircraft American pilots fly.
- The updates are designed to streamline pilot operations across the airline's fleet, according to Tajer.
- "American Airlines Flight Operations management is attempting to circumvent robust safety-related pilot training by unilaterally imposing operational changes via bulletin," leaders from the APA, which represents 15,000 American Airlines pilots, said in a post on its website Monday. "While APA does not oppose fleet harmonization, we are steadfast in our commitment that pilots must be properly trained BEFORE operating with passengers."

FAA Explains NOTAM System Failure
KEY POINTS:
- The computer failure that prompted a halt of all US flight departures was caused when a data file was damaged as a result of a failure to follow government procedures, the Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday.
- Unspecified “personnel” were responsible for corrupting the file, which led to the outage of an FAA computer system that sends safety notices to pilots, the agency said in a statement. That triggered the FAA to order a halt to all US departing flights, causing thousands of delays and cancellations Wednesday.
- “The system is functioning properly and cancellations today were below 1%,” the agency said.
- The preliminary indications are that two people working for a contractor introduced errors into the core data used on the system known as Notice to Air Missions, or Notam, according to a person familiar with the FAA review. The person asked not to be identified speaking about the sensitive, ongoing issue.
