Aviation Industry Updates: April 4, 2023

Delta, United, JetBlue, American to Cut New York Flights This Summer

KEY POINTS:

  • Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and American Airlines have all indicated they will cut flights in the New York City area this summer as the region, one of the busiest in the U.S., faces a shortage of air traffic controllers.
  • The three airlines could reduce flights at New York JFK and LaGuardia, and Newark airports by up to 10 percent this summer following U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidance of the controller shortage. None of the carrier’s have removed the flights from their schedules yet, but all have said that they will after a FAA-led meeting on the situation on March 29.
  • The FAA said earlier in March that it expects air traffic controller staffing to only be about 54 percent of needed levels in the New York area; nationally staffing will be about 81 percent. And, without flight reductions at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark by airlines, roughly 45 percent of all flights into and out of the region could be delayed.
  • The FAA staffing shortage is not new. Last June, Delta CEO Ed Bastian highlighted air traffic control as the most “stressed” segment of the aviation ecosystem at the time. United executives echoed that view a few weeks later. Part of the problem is the length of time it takes to train a new air traffic controller — three years — and the fact that the FAA suspended training during the pandemic despite an already lean workforce.

American Airlines Pilots 'Near' Reaching Agreement On New Contract

KEY POINTS:

  • Pilots at American Airlines (AAL.O) are "near" reaching a comprehensive agreement in principle with the company on a new contract, according to a pilot union memo seen by Reuters.
  • In an update to its members after three weeks of "intense" negotiations, the Allied Pilots Association (APA) said every aspect of the new contract has been "placed on the table, discussed, negotiated, and costed."
  • The union, which represents over 13,000 pilots at the Texas-based carrier, said the company has committed to "match" industry-leading compensation for pilots and provide resources to improve the quality of life and work rules.
  • American pilots, who received their last pay increase in 2019, have been protesting for a new contract. The APA is holding a strike authorization vote this month to put pressure on the company to fast-track the contract negotiations.
  • Both American Airlines and United Airlines (UAL.O) have promised an "industry-leading" contract to their pilots.

Spirit/JetBlue Merger Is Good News For Frontier Airlines

KEY POINTS:

  • Frontier (ULCC) - Get Free Report and Spirit (SAVE) - Get Free Report have pioneered the model that many big-name carriers, including Delta Airlines (DAL) - Get Free Report, have copied with their basic-economy fares. In this model your ticket buys you the right to be on the plane, but not much else.
  • That model has democratized flying, in that it has lowered costs if people are willing to make sacrifices. If Spirit's planned merger with JetBlue (JBLU) - Get Free Report goes through, Spirit would stop using that model. That's a prime reason federal regulators might block the deal.
  • If the merger goes through, however, it may create a lot of opportunity for Frontier, which will be the last major airline fully devoted to the low-cost, a la carte model.

JetBlue Is Encouraging Florida Girls To Pursue A Career In Aviation

KEY POINTS:

  • JetBlue has brought its annual Fly Like A Girl event to Fort Lauderdale, inspiring the next generation of women in aviation. More than 100 local 8-14 year olds were brought together at Jetscape Services to learn more about the industry.
  • The event was led by JetBlue's chief financial officer and president of the JetBlue Foundation, Ursula Hurley, and held in partnership with the airline’s Women in Flight Crewmember Resource Group (CRG), the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team, the Corporate Social Responsibility team and the JetBlue Foundation.
  • JetBlue's annual event aims to showcase the various career possibilities in the aviation industry and promote interest in STEM fields - Science, Education, Technology, and Mathematics. Fly Like A Girl offers young girls the opportunity to meet with and learn directly from women from across the airline, discovering what it is like to work as a woman in aviation.
  • As part of the day's events, the children took part in experimental activities and also boarded one of the airline's Airbus A320s to see firsthand the impact they could have on the aviation industry.
